The “Implementing Cisco MPLS (MPLS) 2.3” course covers the implementation of Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) on Cisco routers. The primary focus of the course is the implementation of MPLS Layer 3 VPNs. The course also includes an introduction to MPLS traffic engineering. All the topics that are covered in the course are supplemented with practical labs that reinforce the theoretical knowledge and allow the students to see MPLS VPN technology in action.

For those students that want to expand their knowledge and understanding of MPLS technology beyond the topics that are covered in this course, the following Cisco Press books are highly recommended:

  • MPLS Fundamentals: Although the title seems to suggest that this book is an introduction level text on MPLS, it actually goes into a fair level of depth on many aspects of MPLS. Although there is a fair amount of overlap with the topics that are covered in the course, it provides good background information on additional topics, such as AToM, VPLS, MPLS QoS, and IPv6 over MPLS. It also contains additional detail on topics that are covered in the course, making it a good supplement to the course materials.
  • MPLS and VPN Architectures and MPLS and VPN Architectures Volume II: These two books are the classic Cisco Press texts on MPLS and MPLS VPNs. Although they have become somewhat outdated, they still contain good background information on the fundamental technologies.
